Mrs Dalloway (1925) and Fashion History

from £28.00

Mrs Dalloway (1925) and Fashion History with Claire Nicholson

Mrs Dalloway was written at a time when Woolf was beginning to be involved with the world of fashion via an association with the Editor of Vogue, Dorothy Todd, and the fashion editor Madge Garland. The novel shows an acute awareness by Woolf of fashion and its role in the modern era.

This lecture will explore some of the sartorial messages in the novel; is Clarissa a 'follower of fashion'? Why is Miss Kilman so determinedly out of fashion? Who shows a sophisticated knowledge of fashionable dress? Is clothing a good indication of character?

Dr Claire Nicholson is Chair of the Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain and author of a book on Woolf and Clothing, to be published in spring 2027.
