A Visit to Monks House and Charleston 2026

Immediately after the 2026 Woolf Summer Course in Cambridge, we offer an optional trip to Monks House, home to Virginia and Leonard Woolf from 1919, and also Charleston, home to Woolf’s sister Vanessa Bell and her circle.

Virginia Woolf did much of her writing at Monks House. Leonard also wrote there and looked after the large garden and orchard. The house belongs to the National Trust.

Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant moved to Charleston in 1916. The house became a gathering point for the early 20th century’s radical artists, writers and thinkers known as the Bloomsbury Group. At Charletson, they lived out their progressive social and artistic ideals. Virginia and Leonard Woolf lived close by and visited frequently.

The price includes travel by coach from Cambridge to Monks House and Charleston and back on Saturday 8 August 2026, plus entry to both houses.

Both Monks House and Charleston are fascinating places with lovely gardens. Do join us for a visit after the Woolf Summer Course. Members of the course get first priority for booking. If there is space, we will open the trip to other people.
