A Walk Around A Room of One’s Own
Virginia Woolf Season 2025-26
A Walk Around A Room of One’s Own (1929) with Frances Spalding
This lecture looks at A Room of One’s Own from inside and out, noting, among other things, the synchronicity between the date this book was published and the year in which the Woolfs decided to add another room to Monk’s House, where they spent part of each year. As this room could not be entered from within the house but only through a door that opened into the garden, it became not just her bedroom but also her ‘room of one’s own’; shared, however, with her complete collection of Shakespeare, the covers of each volume enlivened with book jackets made by herself.
Professor Frances Spalding is the author of books on Vanessa Bell, the Bloomsbury Group, Stevie Smith, and many other topics. She is an Emeritus Fellow of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge.
