Rooms for Women in A Room of One’s Own
Rooms for Women in A Room of One’s Own (1929) with Alison Hennegan
A Room of One’s Own is based on two lectures that Woolf gave in Cambridge in October 1928, addressing the students at the two women’s colleges: Newnham and Girton. Women were gradually gaining access to universities, the professions, the vote, and much else. What did women need and want to succeed in the modern world of 1928? And what sorts of rooms did they need?
Alison Hennegan will explore the importance of rooms in the first women’s colleges in Cambridge. What rooms were public, what were private? What did women need to study successfully at Cambridge?
Alison Hennegan is a retired Fellow of Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge. She studied as an undergraduate at Girton College, Cambridge.
