Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1847)

from £30.00

Anne Brontë, often later overshadowed by her sisters, Charlotte and Emily, was in fact initially the most successful of the three in publishing terms. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall outsold her sisters’ works and earned more on publication.

Controversy surrounded the book from the beginning, deemed scandalous for the ‘roughness’ and ‘savagery’ of its male characters and denounced for its depiction of sexual violence and radical politics, and for its espousal of a woman-centred analysis of the period’s injustices and evils. Charlotte loathed it. This lecture explores a passionate work by the ‘quiet’ Brontë.
