The Dinner Party in To the Lighthouse

from £28.00

The Dinner Party in To the Lighthouse (1927) with Trudi Tate

At the heart of To the Lighthouse sits the famous dinner party scene. The first section of the novel is set on a single day. Towards the end of the day, all the characters come together at the table, presided over by Mrs Ramsay.

It is a powerful scene of a community which also questions the structures which shape that community: marriage, the family, the house, gender inequality, hostility … and also kindness, understanding, and love. This lecture will explore the complex dynamics in this scene, and the importance of the dining room, and other rooms, shared or private, in the Ramsay family’s beloved summer house.

Live online lecture and seminar with Trudi Tate, Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, and Director of Literature Cambridge.
